Jonathan Sothcott Interview By Scott McGlynn

Jonathan Sothcott a independent film producer based in London,

 He’s created a number a great films.

I caught up with Jonathan for a Q&A about future projects, will he work with Danny Dyer again, and who would he want to work with?

unnamed-6

Scott McGlynn: Growing up, did you always know you wanted to get involved in movies?

Jonathan Sothcott: Most of my earliest memories are of watching movies – Return of the Jedi, Octopussy, One Million Years BC (the film, not my age) – i craved the escapism of the movies and consumed them like some sort of film junkie. My family rented 3 or 4 films a week and i’d watch my favourites again and again… The Karate Kid, Masters of the Universe, Big Trouble In Little China, The Monster Squad…

I knew I wanted to be involved but it was tough… i grew up in the middle of nowhere and there was no internet… so i knocked on a lot of doors and when they all remained closed i snuck round the back and slipped in an open window! A metaphorical one, obviously! Actually i really owe it all to the actor Martin Kemp, one of my best friends, who really believed in me and got behind me in my twenties which opened a huge amount of doors. I’ll never forget that. The world would be a better place with more Martins.

SM: Can you remember the first movie you bought?

JS: When i was a kid we rented videos rather than buying them really. But when i was a teenager that all changed. I bought hundreds and hundreds of ex-rental videos. I loved – and love – 80s movies. All those synth scores and neon lighting. I still go to HMV and buy DVDs and blu rays every week… i like physically owning films (and books)… digital just isn’t the same.

SM: You made some awesome movies, Which one in your eyes, Your most proud of and why?

JS: Thank you mate. I think the best film I’ve made so far is Vendetta, it was a powerful bit of film-making with a great central performance, maybe his best, by Danny Dyer. I’m also proud of We Still Kill The Old Way. Both of these films are vigilante movies which is a theme that resonates with audiences. We made a sequel to We Still called We Still Steal The Old Way and are making another. Having a franchise is rather wonderful.

vendetta_quad_uk_danny-dyer

SM: You’ve worked with some major UK actors like Danny Dyer, Martin Kemp, Dexter Fletcher and April Pearson to name a few, Would you like to get all these back in one huge movie?

JS: At one point we talked about a team up of Vendetta, We Still Kill and Age of Kill but none of the films are really big enough.. and it’d just look cheap… Chavengers Assemble. I would like to do one great British crime movie mixing all the usual suspects with a generation of new talent. Its so important in my game to give emerging actors a chance.

SM: What are your top 3 all time movies, You could watch over and over…

JS: Jaws, Star Wars: A New Hope and The Dark Knight Rises. There are dozens more but they really resonate me. I’m a huge James Bond fan too. I know them all backwards.

SM: What Actor or Actress would you like to work with and why?

JS: Actress is easy – Billie Piper. I just adore her, she’s mesmerisingly brilliant. Also Sharon Stone (my favourite actress) and Scarlet Johansson. Actors – Sir Michael Caine. Sir Roger Moore. They were my two favourites growing up. Going younger, John Simm (just brilliant), Ross Kemp (nobody else like him in the UK, so much charisma) and Robert Downey Jr because he’s just the coolest guy in the world.

SM:  Have you got any embarrassing stories you can share that’s happened on set?

JS: A couple of the actual movies are pretty embarrassing!!! Last year on Eat Local we had the wonderful Charlie Cox who plays Daredevil. He had a remarkable stunt double. One day i introduced his double to set visitors thinking it was Charlie. Not my finest moment… thank god they didn’t ask for a selfie.

SM:  What projects are you working on now? Any spoilers you can give us?

JS: We are in pre-production on a US horror film called Tormented which is about sleep paralysis. It was my idea as its something I’ve experienced… and i’m very proud of the script Adam Stephen Kelly has written. We have two film releases on the horizon – We Still Steal The Old Way in April and Bonded By Blood 2 in May – both fun sequels to earlier films. I’ve also branched out into publishing with my business partner Damien Morley and we are making some big moves in that area later this year.

SM: GQ said you are “A Film producer behind a whole new generation of on-screen hardmen” you must of felt proud right?

JS: Well I do stand behind a lot of tough guys!! Haha. Yes its a huge compliment and i do enjoy making these sort of alpha male movies. So long as people keep buying them i’ll keep making them.

unnamed

SM: What 2017 planned for Jonathan Sothcott?

JS: Well i’m in LA at the minute and ultimately i want to move here. Its basically a mining town where they mine films. I hate the London attitude of just talking about stuff rather than getting on and making things happen. I’m the most driven, ambitious person you will ever meet. As I said we are also in the publishing game now – print titles as well as online. A holiday would be nice though. Somewhere hot!

James Hughes Interview By Scott McGlynn

James Hughes from Glasgow, Hit our screens this summer appearing on The X Factor getting through to

Nicole Scherzinger judges houses.

I met up with James to talk about X Factor, Up Coming Gigs, Matt Terry and Honey G!

jameshughesfeat

Scott McGlynn: We seen you get to Nicole Scherzinger’s judges houses, Tell me about you X-Factor experience?

James Hughes: I loved the the whole X Factor experience. Its unforgettable, there are ups and downs and its a tough!

I feel you have to be emotionally prepared for The X Factor or else it will slowly brake you. I’m happy I auditioned for The X Factor and I’m happy I’ve seen what the show can do to peoples lives.

SM: I honestly loved your audition and six chair challenge song choice “Tina Turner – Proud Mary” Your a fan of the classic i noticed, Did you grow up listening to the old divas / classics?

JH: I don’t think your much of a performer if you didn’t listen to old diva classics. The soul and passion in that music tells its own story and is nothing like the “MUSIC” we hear today.

SM: Do you think you will audition again next year (2017) ?

JH: I’ve been changing my mind so much when asked this question. I would go back if I was guaranteed to make it to the live shows, if not then i wouldn’t go back!

SM: Who are you loving on the show and why?

JH: There’s only one person left on the show that I like and its Matt Terry! I didn’t think Matt would be able to handle live shows but he’s proven me wrong and is smashing it every week. Apart from Matt I don’t really see anyone on the same level.

x-factor-57

SM: I’ve seen on your Twitter your not a fan of Honey G can you tell me why? What was she like behind the scenes?

JH: I’ve been pretty harsh on Honey G, She’s done well to get where she has got but she has no talent and doesn’t deserve a place in that competition!

That’s what Britain’s Got Talents is for, joke acts.

SM: Being on the XF  gives you a platform, Will we be seeing you performing anywhere soon?

JH: I have lots of things planned and I’m really excited about them! I’m going to be performing in a lot of different placed and I can’t wait to tell everyone what I have planned!

SM: Do you ever suffer from nerves? If you do how do you prepare yourself?

JH: I don’t suffer from nerves, I’m a very confident individual.

Everyone gets nervous including me but I think I control it well. I just go into my own little world and do what I do best which is perform.

x-factor-2016-judges-houses-boys-14-1

SM: Can you tell me your first single you bought?

JH: I think the first single I bought was “Love on Top by Beyoncé” I’ve bought so many!

SM: Who are you loving in the charts right now?

JH: I’m not really loving anyone in the charts at the moment, I don’t really think their’s any soulful songs with meaning so I’m not really interested with any current music.

MikelyRik Interview By Scott McGlynn

Music and Performer MikelyRik is a global star from 100k hits on YouTube, Touring the world and with new music on the way.

I caught up with MikelyRik to get the lowdown…

mikelyrik-flaunt-by-stackzmedia-1

Scott: Tell me 3 facts about yourself that no-one else knows?

MikelyRik: Hmmm, only 3? OK… One: Before I started writing songs, and poetry, I used to draw and create entire comic book stories for my classmates throughout middle and high school…Two: I used to have a fear of dogs when I was a kid, due to a crazy experience in Jamaica. And Three: growing up in a Gospel heavy, Jamaican, Christian home, the very first non-gospel record I ever remember hearing was “ShooBeeDoo” by Madonna lol!

Scott: Love your song “Celebrate” tell us about it.

MikelyRik: Thank you, I’m glad you love it. It’s one of the only songs that I didn’t write on my current EP “Genre Theater” but when it was presented to me, I fell in love with it too. It was written by an amazing talented songwriter, Jaron Hitz, who has also written for many amazing artists.
I’ve gotten lots of Feedback about what the song means to various people via fan mail, Facebook, YouTube comments and such but the general unifying idea is that it’s important to feel celebratory at some point on a daily basis! I do believe that as long as you’re alive, there is always something to celebrate. The music video, which recently surpassed 100K views on YouTube (I’m so humbled by that!) has several examples including: a quirky guy being accepted by a cool crew for who he is, a beautiful lesbian couple getting engaged, a young lady graduate and overall positive vibes.. All being celebrated in the video.

Scott: You seen and worked all around the world, What’s been most memorable place and why?

MikelyRik: When I started doing music, I really just wanted to perform & share my passion and ideas with as many people as possible. I had no idea pursuing my dreams would take me to Hong Kong, Dubai, Bahrain and all of these amazing, beautiful, exotic locations. One of the most memorable experiences so far was recently in Atlanta Georgia, simply because lots of the fans and supporters out there are so avid and faithful, singing my songs along with me. I’ve been there several times and each time I go back, it’s like seeing old friends… That’s unbelievable to me and very humbling every single time.

Scott:  Other than music what other things do you enjoy doing?

MikelyRik: I’m almost always doing something music related. Rehearsing, writing, typing up plans, thoughts, ideas… And when I’m not, I like to try to spend as much time with my family and close friends as possible. I’m into all kinds of philosophical books, meditation, health & fitness, random genres of movies and comic book world related stuff… including collecting action figures. Boring right?

Scott: I’ve known you to perform a few times at Rockbottom club in Mumbai, Will we be seeing you back there soon?

MikelyRik: I’ve performed a a few different Rockbottom clubs, the one in Dubai was definitely memorable but so was the one in Abu Dhabi! I’m always open to heading back to venues I’ve already played. The familiarity of returning is so very captivating to me!

Scott: You love your fashion, Whats the most expensive thing you bought?

MikelyRik: Actually man, some of the most expensive pieces I’ve worn, were rented or for promotional use lol just keeping it real! I spend a lot on clothes, but not as much as one would think. I might treat myself to something ridiculously expensive once every few months, but I can’t remember the most expensive thing I bought, fashion-wise…

mikelyrik-2016-600x650

Scott: Which artists are you loving right now and has made it on your playlist?

MikelyRik: I listen to and am inspired by so many different genres so my playlist ranges from Kid Cudi to Madonna to Radiohead. From Lauryn Hill to Troye Sivan, from Tinie Tempah to Janelle Monae… I’m telling you man, very eclectic.

Scott: What has 2017 got in store for you?

MikelyRik: The fans have been so very supportive, I’m still in shock at my monthly listeners on Spotify. So 2017 already has some scheduled performances in locations that I’m super excited about as well as some new releases and projects that I’ve been working extremely hard on with some very cool and talented people who I know, many will be excited about! Just stay tuned to my website and my social media for updates!
